Artist Statement:
Dividing the Deep, my most recent body of work, is a compendium of my findings. Theoretically, this inquiry looks into how commercialization has permeated our oceans’ deepest recesses. For educational purposes, I juxtapose human depravity with satisfaction.
My design process begins with obtaining research to determine the color palette and resources required for overlaying imagery. For example, I collect color samples from vanished environments and use desaturated pigments to contrast with the vibrancy of a thriving past. I then combine this with handpicked photos and text to create multidimensional graphics that express what is happening.
I am inspired by artists and designers such as Andre Ducci, Art Chantry, and David Carson. I apply specific skills from each that, when combined, complement one another and create something unique. The interaction inspired the evolution of my skill sets and aesthetic.
This inquiry and effort have sparked further research and ongoing investigations into the concept of Dividing the Deep. I am humbled by the multitude of events that have resulted from human exploitation and resource marketing with little respect for the world’s natural balance. The increased eradication of natural dangers could lead to the extinction of our oceans and ourselves. This work will educate the public and serve as a catalyst for positive change.
